Legendary British actor and former Coronation Street star Geoffrey Hughes has died ‘peacefully in his sleep’ his agent confirmed.

The Keeping up Appearances and The Royle Family performer was cemented in the heart of millions as binman Eddie Yeats in the Manchester-based soap in Weatherfield during the 1970s and 80s.

And on Friday evening, the 68-year-old lost his long-term battle with prostate cancer and passed away ‘peacefully in his sleep’.

A Coronation Street spokeswoman said: “We are very sad to hear of the death of Geoffrey Hughes.

“He created a legendary and iconic character in Eddie Yeats who will always be part of Coronation Street.

“Everyone connected with the programme sends our sincerest condolences to his family.”

Hughes, who starred as Twiggy in alongside Ricky Tomlinson in the BBC sitcom, thought he had beaten the cancer in 2009, but was told it had returned a year later.
