Extending his scintillating start to life at Manchester United, Robin van Persie has scooped more than half the fans’ vote for Player of the Month.
Netting five goals in December, as well as teeing up Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra, drove the Dutchman to 58% of fans’ choice for the club’s stand-out player – his injury-time winner against derby rivals Manchester City is certainly his most relished.
And throughout the season of giving, both Van Persie and Rooney notched a handful of goals, but the £24million summer signing edged out his England counterpart (7%), Michael Carrick (27%) and Patrice Evra (8%).
With a brace against Wigan Athletic inspiring United to revenge for last year’s costly 1-0 defeat, Sir Alex Ferguson heaped praise on the striker.
“Robin is a completely rounded footballer with his ability to make and take goals,” the Scot said. “We knew we were getting a top player, a major player, who was going to make the difference to the team.
“Those were my thoughts when we went for him. He’s come to us at the very peak of his career.”
