I’m no nervous pervis! David de Gea pips Wayne Rooney to Manchester United fans’ Man of the Match

By Dean Wilkins

Under-fire keeper David de Gea ousted critics’ apprehensions by scooping Manchester United fans’ Man of the Match ahead of Wayne Rooney for the win over Fulham.

The young Spaniard looked shaky in recent games, and has been subjected to a hefty amount of criticism – several poor saves and a lack of authority have left many questioning his ability between the sticks.

But with two world-class saves at Craven Cottage, the 22-year-old shot-stopper earned the backing of supporters and fended off competition from the game’s only goalscorer Rooney.

De Gea picked up 44% of the vote, while the in-form England striker (38%), Jonny Evans (9%), Nani (5%) and Rio Ferdinand (4%) completed the top five.

Having convinced Sir Alex Ferguson that he is the club’s No. 1 keeper, De Gea has held his place in the starting line up.

And with captain Nemanja Vidic’s presence back to boost the dressing room, United look to have settled their defensive nerves and conceded just six goals in their last nine games – a far cry from their meagre start to the campaign.
