Non-league Matters: Stockport chase second successive victory as FC United continue FA Cup qualification run

By Matt Davies

MM takes a look at this weekend’s non-league action, with a host of clubs embroiled in the latest round of FA Cup qualifying.

Blue Square Bet Conference

Hereford United v Stockport County

Stockport County visit Edgar Street to play Hereford United.

County climbed to 14th after last weekend’s 3-1 win at Ebbsfleet and have suffered just one defeat in their last five games.

Jim Gannon will be hoping his side can record a second away win of the campaign but have lost both recent encounters with the Bulls, without scoring and conceding eight in the process.

Hereford sit three points and four places above County, and four-goal forward Marlon Jackson has three in his last three games.

Hyde v Gateshead

Struggling Hyde host Gateshead at Ewen Fields looking to move from the foot of the table.

The Tigers went down 2-1 at Dartford last weekend, conceding twice in the final five minutes from a winning position and are without a win in three.

Striker Phil Jevons will be looking to add to his tally for the campaign and Scott Spencer will be looking to continue his fine form ahead of England C against Albania U-21 later this month.

The Tynesiders have won four and lost four of their opening 12 games and went unbeaten for six games at the start of the season.

Gateshead have struggled for form since though, and last Saturdays 1-1 draw at AFC Telford United stopped a run of three defeats on the bounce.

FA Cup Third Qualifying Round

Stalybridge Celtic v Whitby Town

Stalybridge Celtic welcome Whitby Town to the Fold, with the visiting side yet to lose a cup match so far this season.

However Whitby have struggled in the league, currently sitting at the foot of the Evo-stik Premier.

The sides last met in 2008 when Celtic ran out 3-0 winners but Whitby dumped out Celtic’s fellow BSB North side Droylsden 4-3 in the last round.

That defeat means Droylsden are without a game this weekend.

Leek Town v Altrincham

Alty travel to Leek Town and Lee Sinnott’s side have yet to lose a competitive game against the team from Evo-Stik First Division South.

Leek overcame lower league opposition in the last round of the FA Cup and also progressed in the trophy following a 2-1 win over Radcliffe last weekend.

Alty forward Damian Reeves picked up the BSB North September ‘player of the month’ award thanks to 12 goals in six games in that period.

Trafford v Marine

Trafford host table-topping Marine of the Evo-Stik Premier Division at Shawe View with £7,500 at stake for the winners.

Garry Vaughan’s side will compete at this stage of the tournament for only the second time in their history.

Striker Michael Oates scored his 15th goal of the season at Harrogate Railway Athletic in the FA Trophy last Saturday and will be looking to add to that tally.

FC United v Kendal Town

FC United’s tie on Sunday against Kendal Town at Gigg Lane will be the Red Rebels’ fifth cup match in their last seven games.

Midfielder Nicky Platt was voted ‘player of the round’ following his hat-trick at Salford City in the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round.

Evo-Stik Premier Division

Ashton United will look to end a run of poor form as ninth-placed Witton Albion visit Hurst Cross.

Evo-Stik League Division One North

Table-topping Mossley welcome Warrington Town – beaten in the league for the first time at Clitheroe last week – to Seel Park.

Curzon Ashton play only their fifth league game of the season as they make the trip to Birkenhead to take on Cammell Laird.

Ramsbottom United are at New Mills while Radcliffe Borough and Salford City travel to Yorkshire for fixtures against Ossett Town and Wakefield respectively.
