Manchester United legends Neville and Robson set to choose next generation of Old Trafford leaders

By Ross McLean

Iconic Old Trafford standard-bearers Gary Neville and Bryan Robson will have the final say as Manchester United search for their first-ever soccer schools global ambassador.

Fans from around the world can enter the Take the Lead Facebook campaign by uploading a video, outlining the attributes they believe a Manchester United captain requires.

The public will vote on their favourite submission before the most popular are sent to the United legends, with Neville eager to hear what supporters have to say.

“Having played for the United first-team for 19 years and captained the side for five of them, I have my own ideas about what it takes to lead on the pitch,” he said.

“However, I’m looking forward to hearing the fans’ opinions.”

Not only will the 2013 global ambassador visit one of the international courses, the winner will also meet the Manchester United first-team squad.

They will also get to run out at the Theatre of Dreams, with Neville – who made 400 appearances for the club – wanting fans to seize this chance with both hands.

“This competition offers a once in a lifetime opportunity,” added Neville.

“Not only can fans meet their idols and play at Old Trafford but also perform an important and responsible role of the Club’s Soccer School’s Global Ambassador.”

Neville and Robson – the man dubbed ‘Captain Marvel’ – won 30 titles between them and are club ambassadors so are well-placed to assess upcoming leadership talent.

And Edoardo Abis, head of Manchester United soccer schools, cannot think of two better people to judge this competition than the former England internationals.

“To have Bryan Robson and Gary Neville as judges seemed fitting as both were legendary captains,” he said.

“Manchester United has a global fan base and the Soccer Schools reflect this by coaching all around the world.

“As such, we wanted to ensure that all the club’s fans were part of the process for selecting the first Global Ambassador and Captain of the Manchester United Soccer Schools programme.”

The competition runs until 23 April and is open to anyone aged eight to 18 years of age.
