Pep’s back soon: Manchester United and City on high alert as Barca legend Guardiola reveals coaching return

By Dean Wilkins

Barcelona’s legendary manager Pep Guardiola – a candidate favoured to fill Sir Alex Ferguson’s one-of-a-kind shoes – has announced his intentions to return to coaching.

The Catalan giant is currently on a year’s sabbatical after retiring from leading Barcelona to anymore silverware and taking residence in New York.

But after being linked with every vacant manager role at Europe’s top clubs since his resignation, Guardiola has sparked the rumour mills into action after announcing his imminent comeback.

At the FIFA Ballon d’Or conference, the 41-year-old said: “I would like to come back to coaching.

“I have been out of coaching for a year and it’s what I would like but there is no reason to give any more specific details.

“I don’t have a team to go to but I would like to go back to coaching. I have taken a decision to return to coaching but beyond that no decision has been taken.”

Along with Jose Mourinho and David Moyes, Guardiola is a strong favourite to take the Old Trafford reigns once 71-year-old Fergie hangs up his watch.

And the former Barca holding midfielder, who spent almost two decades at the club as a player, insists that despite every door in the world being open to him, it would be disrespectful to talk of managing a team that currently has a boss.

Manchester City have also been heavily linked with a move for the man who masterminded 14 trophies in four years.

While Guardiola weighs up his decisions out of the heavy media spotlight of Europe, he revealed that he still keeps a close eye on his former club.

He said: “I keep on watching Barcelona on TV and it’s a great show, a great team and I’m just a fan.”
