‘We have set our standards’: Paul Dickov heaps praise on players as Oldham Athletic seal first home win

Paul Dickov praised his players’ ‘excellent’ performance as Oldham Athletic banished their Boundary Park blues to record their first home win of the season.

Marquee summer signing Christian Montano scored his first goal for the club since joining from West Ham, and Jose Baxter and Dean Furman also netted as Latics beat ten-man Preston North End 3-1.

Coming off the back of the midweek win against Crewe Alexandra it is also the first time that Oldham have won two consecutive games since March.

“We had to keep believing that we were doing the right things,” Dickov told the club’s website, after one win in their first eight matches had seen them slip to 21st.

“What we have done on the training ground we have seen in patches in games.

“But on Tuesday night and today we have set our standards.”

Shane Cansdell-Sherriff’s red card meant the visitors finished the game with ten men, but they scored a late consolation after Jonathan Grounds’ weak headed backpass was seized upon by Akpo Sodje.

However, Dickov is now looking ahead to Latics’ next match – a visit to third-placed Sheffield United next Saturday.

“We reproduced what we are capable of doing today, but now the big test is to do it again next Saturday at Sheffield United,” he told the club’s website.

The Scot also played down an injury to James Tarkowski, which saw the defender replaced before half-time, and expects to have both him and Jean-Yves M’voto back for the trip to Bramall Lane.
