Marathon legends Patrick Makau and Haile Gebrselassie go head-to-head at Bupa Great Manchester Run

Two marathon legends, Haile Gebrselassie and Patrick Makau, are to go head-to-head in the Bupa Great Manchester Run this month.

World marathon record holder Makau is running in the 10kilometre race on May 20, after hearing he is to be left out of Kenya’s Olympic team.

Failing to finish last month’s London Marathon due to a minor injury meant the 27-year-old missed out on a place at this summer’s Games, despite initially being pre-selected for the team.

Makau was rocked from missing out of the selection. He said: “I sacrificed a lot of races since last year for the sake of Olympics, but all that is now down the drain.”

This will be the run’s 10th staging in Manchester, and it is to be broadcast live via BBC.

While general entries are now closed, there are still a limited number of places available with some charities.
