The Andy Gray Column: Roberto Martinez can ensure Wigan Athletic avoid Premier League relegation ambassador Andy Gray was talking exclusively to Mancunian Matters…

It will be a tough season for a lot of teams fighting it out to avoid relegation from the Premier League but after surviving by the skin of their teeth for the last two years, Wigan look like they might be ready to aim a little higher.

The likes of Reading and Southampton will no doubt find it tough while West Ham will be depending on Andy Carroll, but Wigan’s performances so far have certainly intrigued me.

They lost two goals in the first few minutes against Chelsea in their opening game but after that they were excellent, and could have got something out of it.

They’ve played at the DW Stadium twice and only got one point but they’ve taken three on the road with that win at Southampton which Roberto Martinez will be delighted with at this early stage.

They have narrowly escaped relegation in the last couple of seasons but I can see things going better for them this time around.

Martinez has got them playing good football and they have got off to a better start than they usually do.

However they lost Victor Moses to Chelsea which won’t help them in any way, and that could put them in trouble again.

But it’s important not to get carried away with starts – let’s judge these teams after seven or eight games so we can take stock of how they are doing.

As easily as teams like West Brom and Swansea have taken seven points from nine, they could just as easily take one point from the next nine.
