Robin van Persie is joining Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney on the injury list after pulling out of Holland’s squad today.
The 29-year-old Dutch striker did play the full 90 minutes during the 3-2 win over Aston Villa on Saturday – his English strike partner Rooney limped off ten minutes before the end – but has decided to miss the international fixture with a thigh problem.
Rooney will not feature in England’s friendly against Sweden n Wednesday, and although Sir Alex Ferguson will not be concerned about their international absence, nerves will be on tenterhooks until the full extent of their strikers’ injuries are revealed.
But in the meantime, the great escape artists will continue to utilise their magical Mexican Javier Hernandez as Sir Alex hailed his efforts for the Villa turnaround.
“As I have been saying for the last few weeks, [Hernandez] is fresh as he had a good summer break and it’s made a difference to him,” he told Sky Sports “When he came to us two years ago, that’s what we’re seeing again today and, when you score a hat-trick, you pick yourself. I think he’ll be playing next week.
“He does his natural thing. He’s fantastic in the penalty box with his movement, his quickness and being in space and that has got him three goals today.”
Four other Holland internationals have pulled out of the clash in Amsterdam as Roma’s keeper Maaten Stekelenburg and PSV’s Jeremain Lens, Luciano Narsingh and Kevin Strootman picked up knocks over the weekend.
