Manchester United’s Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand set for back-to-back starts as Jonny Evans battles injury

By Dean Wilkins

Old timers Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic could be on the cusp of their second consecutive start this season as Jonny Evans remains an injury doubt.

The duo’s once impenetrable partnership has been rocked during an injury-plagued 18 months for Vidic, and Northern Irish youngster Evans has proven himself in the eyes of Sir Alex Ferguson.

But a hamstring injury could rule out Evans from Wednesday’s FA Cup replay with West Ham as United wait to assess his problem.

“Jonny Evans felt his hamstring on Saturday afternoon,” Sir Alex told MUTV “I was at Nottingham [watching Forest play Peterborough] and got a message at half-time.

“He trained in the morning so it was strange. But Vidic and Ferdinand are experienced and you can’t say any more than that. They were brilliant.”

Vidic was substituted for Chris Smalling after sustaining a knock to his knee in the second-half.

The Serbian skipper continued playing for almost ten minutes but he was hurled off as a precaution.
