Boisterous hooligans who set off flares during Manchester City’s trip to Newcastle are being hunted by police.
Travelling supporters watched as the Premier League champions sealed a comfortable 3-1 victory at St James’ Park but marred the win after launching a burning flare at home fans.
No one was injured in the incident and Tyneside officers are joining forces with Greater Manchester Police to identify the yobs.
A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “A flare was thrown from the section containing Manchester City fans into a section of Newcastle United fans, no one was injured and it was quickly extinguished.
“A second flare was set off in the section containing Manchester City fans.
“Officers at the scene carried out extensive enquiries, including checking CCTV and speaking with available witnesses. However, the person or people responsible are yet to be identified.
“We take incidents such as this extremely seriously and enquiries are still ongoing. Officers continue to work with colleagues at Greater Manchester Police.”
Sergio Aguero, Javi Garcia and Yaya Toure were on target for the visitors while Demba Ba netted his 11th goal of the season for the Magpies.
City’s classy performance was also tarnished by allegations that wingback Aleksandar Kolarov racially abused fans holding an Albanian flag.
Police investigations are ongoing despite the 27-year-old Serbian strongly denying any accusations.
