Brazil youngster Rafael is close to signing a new four-year contract with Manchester United.
The 21-year-old right-back has been at Old Trafford since 2008 – after arriving with twin brother Fabio from Fluminense.
The defender was criticised for some rash tackling last season and suffered with injuries and a lack of first-team football as a result of Chris Smalling’s and Phil Jones’ signings.
But his agent, Cassiano Pereira, told Estadao ESPN: “Rafael is very happy to stay at Manchester United, who are one of the giants of world football and always play in Europe’s biggest competitions.
“Manchester United are the club that opened the door to Europe for him. He is loved, respected and has prestige at the club.
“We are all very happy that he is renewing his contract.”
Rafael won his first call-up to the Brazil national team last month and has made 90 appearances for Manchester United.
His contract will keep him at Old Trafford until 2016 but brother Fabio is being lined up for a loan move to QPR.
Rafael appeared in the 2009 Champions League final defeat to Barcelona.
