Manchester United bid for want-away striker Robin van Persie confirmed by Sir Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Manchester United made a bid for Arsenal captain Robin van Persie – but the Gunners rejected it.

The offer – thought to be £15million – was snubbed by the Londoners as their want-away star is expected to be priced at up to £25million.

The 28-year-old admitted he would not be signing a new contract with the club as he hunts for silverware – sparking interest from United and their neighbours and Premier League champions Manchester City.

“Obviously Arsenal have given out the fact that we’ve made a bid for him,” Ferguson told MUTV.

“We try to keep business as close as possible to us until the moment we conclude a deal. There’s no point talking about something that might not happen.

“There are other clubs interested in the player. We’ve shown an interest and that’s where we’re at the moment.”
