Stockport County looking to break poor run away to Braintree as Hyde host Nuneaton Borough

By Matt Davies

MM takes a look at this weekend’s fixtures for our non-league clubs.

Blue Square Bet Premier Division

Braintree Town v Stockport County

Stockport travel to the Amlin this weekend to take on Braintree Town. The home side have made a mixed start to the season winning just one of four home games, and sit two points and four places above County in the table.

Alan Devonshire’s Iron have struggled of late, losing two on the bounce, and were even unable to fill the substitutes bench against Mansfield last weekend in the wake of an injury crisis. Meanwhile Stockport are near to full strength with only Jon Nolan unavailable for this encounter following his dismissal last weekend.

County have been struggling for results, and the 2-1 defeat at Woking last weekend stretched their winless run to seven games.

Stockport boss Jim Gannon has acted to stem that run by signing former County centre midfielder Paul Turnbull on a three-month loan form Northampton Town. He told the clubs website: “Given the hole in our midfield at the moment, which could do with somebody of his quality and character then I think it’s a perfect time for Paul to come in.”

Hyde v Nuneaton Town

Second bottom in the table Hyde host fifth bottom Nuneaton Borough at Ewen Fields. The Tiger’s will be looking to build on the positives from last weekend’s 3-2 defeat against Lincoln, and can move a point behind their visitors with a win.

Two of Lincoln’s goals last weekend came from the penalty spot, and Hyde should to be keen to avoid gifting Nuneaton’s James Armson the opportunity to add to his tally of three from the spot already this season.

Borough sit just above the relegation zone with nine points from as many games so far this season but will be disappointed after allowing a two-goal lead to slip late on against title chasing Macclesfield to draw 3-3 last time out.

Adam Walker and Andy Brown provide the firepower in the attacking third, having scored six and five goals respectively already this campaign.

The Tiger’s Phil Jevons notched his fourth goal in two games last weekend and Scott Spencer has been in fine form of late, scoring goals for both Hyde and the England C side.

FA Cup Second Qualifying Round

Stalybridge Celtic v Vauxhall Motors

Vauxhall Motors are the visitors to Bower Fold for this FA Cup encounter between two sides from the BSB North. Vauxhall currently occupy a mid-table position, and are currently six places and four points behind Celtic. Dan Parkinson is top scorer for Motors who have scored in every game so far this season but have not kept a clean sheet since the opening day.

Stalybridge midfielder Jack Laird scored both goals for his side in last weekends win and now has five strikes in his last four games.

Whitby Town v Droylsden

Droylsden travel to Whitby Town in this Cup clash keen to avoid an upset against the Evo-Stik Premier Division strugglers.

The Bloods have won all four of the last meetings between the sides but have lost four on the bounce going in to this match. The BSB North side have the opportunity to add to their total of just one win so far this campaign and kick-start a cup run in the progress.

Whitby have picked up just two league points all season, following up last weekend’s draw with another point at highly placed North Ferriby United in midweek.

Shildon v Altrincham

Ebac Northern League Division One minnows Shildon AFC host Altrincham of the BSB North. Shildon currently occupy a mid-table position and Altrincham will be hoping for an easy passage against a side three levels below them in the footballing pyramid.

Alty hotshot Damian Reeves bagged two more in last weekend’s win against Bradford Park Avenue and will want to add to his impressive tally of 13 goals in his last six games.

Trafford v Spennymoor Town

Trafford host defending Northern League champions Spennymoor Town. The visiting side have won all ten of their games so far this season without conceding a goal and reached the third round of qualifying last time out.

Trafford go in to the game on the back of a 3-0 midweek win, and remain unbeaten with eight clean sheets in nine games. The home side have already notched 31 goals this campaign with prolific front-man Michael Oates finding the net on 14 occasions already.

Ashton United v Marine

Ashton United play top of the Northern Premier League Marine with the visitors unbeaten and scoring an average of over two goals a game. United go in to the game after Wednesdays 6-1 mauling away at Buxton, their first defeat of the season.

Curzon Ashton v Bradford Park Avenue

Curzon host BSB North side Bradford PA and will be looking to follow up on Monday night’s penalty success over Goole AFC in the FA Trophy. Bradford have made a steady start following promotion but are without a win in three after defeat to Altrincham last time out.

Evo-stick Division 1 North

Benny Phillips’ Radcliffe Borough provides the opposition for table-topping Mossley.  The Lilywhites came from behind to win at Prescot Cables last week and can extend their lead at the top due to Trafford’s FA Cup involvement.
