It was Manchester United’s veterans who stole the show against Tottenham on Sunday, as Michael Carrick just pipped Rio Ferdinand to fans’ Man of the Match.
The former Spurs’ midfielder dominated the park and continued his fine season, earning 39% of the vote despite his fellow countryman’s commanding performance at the heart of the defence – Ferdinand took 33%
The 31-year-old pass-master proved sometimes experience is more important than rawness, as he also fended off impressive competition from Phil Jones (17%) who took up a role in midfield.
Despite Clint Dempsey’s late leveller, Carrick felt United’s defensive display was solid for 93 minutes of the game as Andre Villas-Boas’ men ran riot at home.
“While Tottenham were coming at us, I thought we defended very well as a team,” he said.
“People were putting their bodies on the line to block shots and we hoped we could see the game out.
“We set up slightly differently but defended well as a team and looked really strong. We just couldn’t see it out.”
Despite failing to find the net again, young striker Danny Welbeck impressed again and took fan’s fourth spot with 11% of the vote.
