Manchester’s sport and leisure centres are joining together on Sunday to celebrate the countdown to the 2012 London Games by holding an Olympics Open Day.

The Olympics Open Day is part of the London 2012 Open Weekend, sponsored by BP.

Residents across Greater Manchester are being invited to take up sport including squash, martial arts and tennis.

Rocky is a supervisor at Ardwick Leisure Centre who are one of the centres taking part.  They are offering free sessions in badminton, basketball and football.

He said: “We’re expecting badminton to be the most popular event this weekend,” before adding, “when the Commonwealths were here we found people were much more interested in taking part in these sports.”

So, does he believe it’s a good thing that the Olympics are coming to Great Britain?

“Hell yes, definitely. It will provide a big boost nationwide for smaller sports venues like us.”
