Manchester United’s Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Wayne Rooney pass QPR injury test – Nani and Jonny Evans out

Manchester United’s England aces are set to return for tomorrow’s clash against QPR, as Wayne Rooney leads their attack while Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are set to be paired together in defence.

Rooney has not featured in United’s back-to-back 1-0 losses against Norwich and Galatasaray while Smalling (shoulder problem) was replaced by Jones – who impressed in his first game of the season.

The young England defenders are set to play their first game alongside one another as centrebacks this campaign as Jonny Evans is struggling for fitness ahead of the Londoners’ trip to Old Trafford.

“Wayne Rooney is fit,” said Sir Alex Ferguson. “He has been training all week, which is good. Chris Smalling should be available but he had a small shoulder injury the other night.

“Jonny Evans will hopefully train today but I don’t know if he will be available.

“I wanted to play Phil Jones anyway and he did very well in his first game.”

But the boss revealed that Portuguese winger Nani remains on the injury list after failing to recover from a tight hamstring.

And hoping to avoid a hat-trick of defeats, the Scotsman is challenging United to pull their form back on track by demolishing haphazardly constructed QPR.

“Hopefully, we can get back on track tomorrow,” he added. “After the disappointment of last week.

“With QPR, it’s probably a lesson to everyone that when you change a team and bring new players in, it’s not easy.”
