Manchester Phoenix make successful start to the season with back-to-back victories

Manchester Phoenix won both their opening league fixtures this weekend as they started the defence of their EPL championship.

Summer signing Martin Cingel – announced as assistant captain this week – played a large part in this, scoring twice in both games.

Coach Tony Hand scored a dramatic overtime winner in Sunday’s 5-4 victory over Basingstoke Bison to secure a second victory in as many days.

The visitors had started brightly and led 3-1 after the first period, with Cingel scoring Phoenix’s first.

The Slovakian then doubled his tally with fellow forward Stephen Wallace also bagging two goals, one coming from an assist by Coach Hand.

At the end of the final period, the teams were locked at 4-4.  Tony Hand handed his team victory with a fifth goal in overtime.

A day earlier, a trip to Berkshire was rewarded with a 5-3 victory over Slough Jets.

Phoenix seemed intent on making a statement in their first league game as Champions – racing into a 4-0 lead after the first period, with goals from Cingel (2), Wallace and Tom Duggan.

After pulling one back in the second period, Jets rallied in the final third, pulling the score back to 3-4.

However, with only 30 seconds left to play, Phoenix made sure of the victory with Juraj Faith pocketing an opening day goal into an open net.

Hand will be pleased with a 100% record so far but these opening games prove the EPL’s other teams will not let them walk away with the title easily.

Next up for Phoenix is a trip to Milton Keynes Lighning on Saturday, followed by a home clash against Swindon Wildcats on Sunday.  Face off is at the usual time of 5.30 at Altrincham Ice Dome.
