‘Fans deserve success’: Emotional Paul Dickov hails Oldham Athletic’s gutsy FA Cup triumph over Liverpool

By Kim Richards

A valiant Paul Dickov dedicated Oldham Athletic’s historic FA Cup triumph to the fans after they vanquished Premier League Liverpool to reach the last 16.

Two goals from Matt Smith and a header from Reece Wabara sealed the victory for Latics who will now host Everton in the fifth round.

Dickov was quick to credit the fans in what was seen as a weekend of giant killings in the FA Cup.

“There are a lot of emotions at the minute,” Dickov told BBC Radio 5 live.

“I am very proud and I am very pleased for the fans as it has been a long time without success for them.

“We started the game ever so well, we got our noses in front and then Liverpool, who have a team full of top-class players, got back into it,” he added.

Latics have struggled to find their league form of late – they have managed to pick up only a point in their last eight games.

“To score before half-time was vital for us,” said Dickov.”We have lost seven out of eight but they have been by the odd goal, like today.

“We have not been getting any luck, but the performances have been OK, and we got the bit of luck we needed today.”

But the Blues held their nerve to see out a memorable win despite strikes from top scorer Luis Suarez and a debut goal for Joe Allen.

As the referee blew for fulltime, Boundary Park went berserk and Latics sealed their place in the fifth round for the first time in almost two decades.
