Bryan Redpath calls for struggling Sale Sharks improvement as young duo brought in for Bath battle

By Colin Henrys

Sale Sharks director of rugby Bryan Redpath is calling for a big improvement ahead of his side’s visit to Bath.

The Sharks currently find themselves bottom of the Aviva Premiership with just a solitary bonus point to their name, and have called up two youngsters in a bid to reverse their fortunes.

Former Leicester Tigers flanker James Doyle, 21, is set to make his senior debut for the Sharks while 19-year-old scrum-half Nathan Fowles is among the replacements.

On the two new faces, Redpath said: “James Doyle and Nathan Fowles are two young members of the group. James has played exceptionally well for the Jets.

“He’s come in and worked really hard to put pressure on others at the club. They both need to go out and enjoy the game as much as they can.”

Sale, who parted company with forwards coach Steve Scott after their defeat to London Welsh last week, are without injured trio Dwayne Peel, Richie Gray and Henry Thomas from that match.

Danny Cipriani also drops to the bench, which means that Nick Macleod and Cillian Willis will form the half-back partnership.

For Bath, former England fly-half Olly Barkley is set to make his last appearance at the Recreation Ground ahead of his move to French club Racing Metro 92, but he has played down the occasion.

“It’s not about me leaving, it’s about the four points,” Barkley told Bath’s website. “If I can say goodbye having helped the team to a win, then I’ll be happy.”

On their last visit to the Rec, the Sharks found themselves 10-0 down at half-time but turned it around to win 16-13, and Redpath is hoping for similar success this time around.

He said: “Last season, Sale Sharks went to Bath on the back of a disappointing home performance and won, later going on to complete a double.

“As I’ve said, last week was unacceptable and hopefully we can show a big improvement.”
