Fuming Oldham Athletic boss Paul Dickov was angered by Doncaster Rovers’ goal as his side lost 1-0 last night at the Keepmoat Stadium.
Latics’ two-match unbeaten run came to an end as David Cotterill’s quickly taken free kick condemned them to defeat.
Dickov believes that referee Gary Sutton’s decision to allow Cotterill to take a quick free kick was wrong.
“The referee made a ridiculous decision for the free kick which was the difference between the teams,” Dickov said
“Usually the referee stands there and blows his whistle. How he allowed it to be taken when our goalkeeper (Dean Bouzanis) was still lining up his wall, which wasn’t set, baffles me.”
Defender Cliff Byrne received his fifth booking of the season ruling him out of Oldham’s next game through suspension.
Bouzanis piled on the misery for Latics when he was sent off in the 90th minute for violent conduct along with Doncaster striker Iain Hume.
“It was stupidity. Dean should not have got involved, but what I would like to know if why Dean was shown a straight red card and Hume two yellows because they were both manhandling each other,” he added.
Despite losing and picking up two suspensions Dickov was pleased with his side’s performance against Doncaster, who went joint top after winning.
“The effort and application was there,” said Dickov
“We have been beaten 1-0 by a side which has been battering teams recently and I don’t think there was much between either of us.”
Oldham have a chance to avenge last night’s defeat as they welcome Doncaster to Boundary Park on Saturday, in the F.A Cup second round.
