Movers and Shakers: Two in, three out for Bury in busy transfer window for Kevin Blackwell

By Mark Shales

Bury FC welcomed two ex-Premier League players to Gigg Lane but lost three others on a busy January transfer deadline day for the Shakers.

Former Everton defender Carl Regan signed on a four-month contract, while one-time Portsmouth midfielder Valéry Mézague joined on non-contract terms following a successful trial.

Manager Kevin Blackwell missed his original targets due to the earlier transfer embargo, but will be hoping the new talent will aid the Shakers survival hopes.

Regan began his career at Goodison Park in 1997 before spells with Barnsley, Hull City, Chester City, as well as representing Macclesfield Town, MK Dons and Bristol Rovers.

The 32-year was released by Notts County earlier in the month, after making 11 starts this season – scoring in a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy win over Scunthorpe United.

Cameroon international Mézague made 11 appearances for Pompey under Harry Redknapp in the 2004/2005 season, while on-loan from French side Montpellier.

After travelling around France with FC Sochaux, Le Harve, Chateaurox and Vannes OC, the 29-year-old moved to Greek second-division side Panetolikos in 2011.

The 29-year-old received his international clearance to round off a successful trial period – just a few months after being released from Greece.

Regan will help to fill the gap left by another ex-Toffee Mark Hughes, who moved to Accrington Stanley on a fourth-month loan deal.

The 26-year-old was Richie Barker’s first signing ahead of the 2011/2012 season and went on to make 56 starts for the Shakers.

Striker Lenell John-Lewis also joined the Bury exodus, tearing up his contract in order to join Blue Square Premiership side Grimsby Town on a free transfer.

The 23-year-old managed just two goals in 19 games this season and signed for the Marines on an 18-month contract.

Bury youth product Andrai Jones completes the trio of leavers – the 21-year-old parting company with the club after making just 11 starts this season.
