Price hike leaves chippies in hot water

CHIPPIES in Manchester  received some unpleasant news this week – fish prices are set to skyrocket.

Fishing in the North Sea and off Scotland’s West Coast is to be scaled back by 25 per cent after a new EU directive.

This will cause the cost of British cod and haddock to shoot up, forcing takeaway owners to rely on costly imports.

Peter Zucca, who has run Portland Plaice on Portland Street for more than 32 years, said: “Fish and chips make up 20 per cent of my business.

“We wouldn’t survive if it became too expensive, it’s as simple as that.”

Trade magazine The Grocer warned: “Higher prices make the future bleak.”
