Gig preview: Roger Waters, The Wall Live @ Manchester Phones4U Arena

By Tom Dyson

Roger Waters brings the psychedelic sounds of Pink Floyd’s ultimate concept album back to the Manchester Phones4u Arena this September as part of his The Wall Live Tour.

If the last tour was anything to go by, then it promises to be truly spectacular as Waters performs at one of the biggest indoor venues in Europe complete with the lasers and pyrotechnics which have long dominated Pink Floyd concerts.

The Wall, released in November 1979, still remains one of the top five best-selling albums of all time so it’s little surprise that in 2010 Waters decided to perform this classic worldwide, with or without his Floyd counterparts. Since 2010 he has performed this album over 200 times.

So why after such a long absence did Roger Waters decide to start up again with The Wall?

On his website he explains: “I recently came across this quote of mine from 22 years ago: What it comes down to for me is this: Will the technologies of communication in our culture, serve to enlighten us and help us to understand one another better, or will they deceive us and keep us apart?

“This new production of The Wall is an attempt to draw some comparisons, to illuminate our current predicament, and is dedicated to all the innocent lost in the intervening years.”

You’d be hard pressed to find a more intriguing yet deeply philosophical concept album brought to life on stage. The highly-detailed special effects certainly enhance this stunning visual display.

Let the lyrics take you on a dark journey and you can begin to understand the pain, fear and paranoia felt by Waters as he tries to establish contact with the outside world.

The classic tracks Another Brick In The Wall, Comfortably Numb and Run Like Hell serve as a reminder to the hugely successful and faultless works of a musical genius.

Roger Waters, The Wall Live will be at the Manchester Phones4u Arena on Monday September 16 at 7:30pm.
