Sir Bobby Charlton’s funeral: How the day played out

Thousands mourned the loss of Sir Bobby Charlton as his funeral procession travelled from Old Trafford to Manchester Cathedral this afternoon.

On what was a sombre day for fans of Manchester United and England, scores of individuals came to pay their respects to the 1966 World Cup winner.

People arrived at Old Trafford from all across the UK and the world, sharing tales of their encounters with Sir Bobby and his caring nature.

He played 758 times for United across a 17-year career, netting 249 goals, and is widely considered a legend of the club.

Alongside these achievements, he was part of the World Cup winning England squad in 1966, notably receiving the Ballon d’Or that same year.

Despite the cold and wind, massive crowds had turned up along the funeral cortege’s route, clapping as the procession went by from around 1.30pm onwards.

The 1958 – their name referring to the tragic Munich Air Disaster in which Sir Bobby was injured – produced a banner, which said: ‘Sir Bobby, the legacy you left us with. History, dignity and integrity. Our promise to you. We will protect that legacy and keep the red flag flying high.’

The police-led procession arrived at Manchester Cathedral, where yet more crowds were waiting to see off one of England’s footballing greats.

Ahead of the procession’s arrival, football legends, former players and admirers of Sir Bobby entered the Cathedral, with the Prince of Wales also in attendance.

Sir Alex Ferguson led the United representation alongside current players, ex-players and teammates of his in the 1968 European Cup winning team.

Up to a thousand guests were present in the Cathedral in a service with numerous eulogies and several hymns.

Around an hour later, fans crowded around the Cathedral for one last send-off as the family left for a private funeral.

One of Manchester United and England’s greats may no longer be with us, but his memory will live on for many years to come.
