What is drifting? Drift League GB in Wigan

Most people are familiar with motorsport in the form of racing, whether that’s Formula 1, Touring car or even Rally.

Incredibly simple, the driver who crosses the line first wins. But motorsport is more diverse than this.

One example of this is drifting – driving a car sideways – where drivers must use their skill and experience to get the rear of their car breaking free, balancing the throttle and steering to stay sideways and in control.

Now officially recognised by the global governing body for motorsport, the FIA, drifting is growing in popularity.

The sport has two main elements. Firstly there are solo runs, where drivers showcase extreme skill to qualify them for battles. Battles are different, one driver leads and another follows. The follower has to copy the lead driver’s moves, staying as close as possible and without straying over the white lines.

Drift League GB is just one championship following these rules. The championship visited Wigan for the second round of the 2023 season and MM went along to find out more.
