Preview: Vance Joy @ Manchester Academy 3 – February 12

By Sam Johnson

Best known for his 2014 break-out indie-folk hit Riptide, Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy has achieved massive success in his native Australia and is slowly emulating that across the globe.

With burgeoning fame the Aussie star embarking on tour and is set to perform a sold-out gig at Manchester’s Academy 3 on February 12.

His song Riptide, which reached the top ten late last month, has been a prominent feature on Radio 1’s A-List for a while now. The single is currently holding a firm position at number fourteen in the official UK singles chart this week – a good place to be ahead of the gig.

Joy, whose real name is James Keogh, has seen the hit certified three times platinum in his home country and was the twelfth best-selling single of 2013 there – ahead of mega-hits by the likes of Miley Cyrus and Jason Derulo.

His debut EP God Loves You When You’re Dancing was originally released early last year and has taken quite a few months to build momentum. Garnering a hefty amount of critical acclaim for his upbeat style and warming happy-go-lucky sound, he is developing a name for himself alongside the likes of Jason Mraz and Jack Johnson.

Joy will be performing other tracks from the EP including Emmylou, Snaggletooth and From Afar to a packed out crowd as part of his European tour. The show is one of two stops he will be making in the UK (the other being Scala in London) before heading on to gigs in Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam.

The evening will kick off with Hertfordshire born singer-songwriter Rhodes who will compliment Vance Joy’s quirky acoustic sound.

Tickets for the gig on February 12 at Manchester Academy 3 are currently sold-out, however another UK tour in September has already been announced where Vance Joy will be returning to Manchester’s Academy 2 on September 25.
