The pride of all Europe? MM’s top five Manchester United chants

By Tim Hyde

Old Trafford can sometimes be criticised for having a rather flat atmosphere.

However, on those ‘special nights’ as Sir Alex liked to say, there are few grounds that can replicate the cries of passion bellowing down from the hallowed stands.

As arguably the world’s best supported club the chants of supporters are sung around the globe from the Stretford end to hamlets in India and rural Japanese villages.

To honour the musical support crafted by those on the terraces MM has complied its top five favourite Manchester United chants.

5. United Calypso

Manchester, Manchester United
A bunch of bouncing Busby Babes
They deserve to be knighted!
If ever they are playing in your town
You must get to that football ground
Take a lesson come and see
Football taught by Matt Busby

Perhaps the most iconic United song of them all this song can be heard at pretty much every home game.

The calypso was recorded in 1955 by Edric Connor and was the first Manchester United Football Club song.

Since the song was created United have won 17 Premier League titles, 9 FA Cups and 3 Champions Leagues.

4. You are my Solskjaer

You are my Solskjaer,
My Ole Solskjaer,
You make me happy,
When skies are grey,
Oh Alan Shearer,
Was f*****g dearer,
So please don’t take,
My Solskjaer away…

The baby-faced Assassin is a man that is dear to every United fan.

The Norwegian super sub became a hero during his time at Old Trafford after continuously popping up with crucial goals from the bench.

Two goals against Liverpool in the FA Cup in the infamous treble season live long in the memory of United fans.

As if that wasn’t enough the striker ensured United won the Champions League in the most dramatic fashion to commentary cries of ‘AND SOLSKJAER HAS WON IT!’

You are my Solskjaer can still be heard echoing around the Theatre of Dreams today

3. Viva Ronaldo

Viva Ronaldo, viva Ronaldo,
Running down the wing,
Hear United sing,
Viva Ronaldo

The Stretford-end are unlikely to forget about a certain Portuguese number seven that took the footballing world by storm.

The theatre of dreams often plays host to fans singing Cristiano Ronaldo’s praises despite his move to Real Madrid in 2009.

Fans also sing variations of Viva Ronaldo (get him on a plan, bring him back from Spain) in the hope the 28-year-old will one day return to Old Trafford.

2. Twelve days of Cantona

On the twelth day of Christmas my true-love gave to me,
Twelve Cantonas,
Eleven Cantonas,
Ten Cantonas,
Nine Cantonas,
Eight Cantonas,
Seven Cantonas,
Six Cantonas,
Fiiiiiiiive Cantonas,
Four Cantonas,
Three Cantonas,
Two Cantonas,
And an Eric Cantona.

Without a doubt Eric Cantona is a Manchester United Legend and every Christmas without fail the 12 days of Cantona can be heard from the terraces.

The clubs favourite Frenchman played at Old Trafford for five seasons scoring 82 goals and in that time he built a reputation of being one of the best players to grace the Premier League.

1. The Pride of All Europe

We are just one of those teams
That you see now and then,
We often score six
But we seldom score ten,
We beat em at home
And we beat em away,
We kill any bastards
That get in our way;
We are the pride of all Europe
The cock of the North,
We hate the Scousers
The Cockneys of course (and Leeds!),
We are United
Without any doubt,
We are the Manchester boys

The notorious Pride of all Europe chant has been sung across the continent especially during Champions League ties as the Red Devils are particularly proud of winning European honours three times.

The United faithful regard the pride of all Europe as an all-time favourite and love to chant the song at least once every game.
