Bolton boss Dougie Freedman targets assault on Championship table after first win against Birmingham

By Scott Hunt

Bolton manager Dougie Freedman has targeted a quick progression up the Championship table after Wanderers won their first league game since April at Birmingham on Saturday.

Goals from Jermaine Beckford and Neil Danns secured the win for under-pressure Freedman and moved Bolton out of the bottom three of the SkyBet Championship.

The Bolton manager is hoping the 2-1 away win will kick-start a charge up the table.

“I think that in our performance today there are certainly signs that we can climb the league table very quickly,” Freedman said.

“This league win has been coming for some time now. We all know it has been a frustrating time of late.

“I thought it was a very well organised performance from start to finish.”

Beckford opened the scoring after 12 minutes, capitalising on an error from Birmingham’s Dan Burn to fire home his first of the season – and the first for any Bolton striker all season

Loanee Neil Danns doubled the advantage just after the hour mark before Birmingham pulled one back five minutes later.

However, Bolton managed to hang on and Freedman praised the performance of his squad and the new additions.

“A number of players have come in and worked very hard,” he said.

“I believe that the Bolton fans deserve these kinds of players. I’m very happy for the players at this moment because they’ve put in a lot of hard work.”

The Trotters don’t play again until October 19 against Sheffield Wednesday.

“If we’re being honest we’d like to go and play a game this Tuesday,” Freedman said.

“Our confidence is high right now. We’ll regroup and get one or two players back up to fitness and go again.”
