Lee Johnson delights as Oldham go from ‘low as a snake’s belly’ to League One’s form side

Three weeks ago Lee Johnson’s side were without a win in League One. Fast forward to early September and they’re in the top half of the table.

Three wins and three clean sheets on the bounce have led to Johnson and his men storming up the league table.

The Oldham boss cannot praise his side enough for their recent performances given the added pressure that is piled on a side not playing well.

“What a difference a week makes. Seven days ago, everyone was as low as a snake’s belly but three wins later and everyone is riding high and I’m delighted,” he told the club’s website.

“It was a really tough game again but I thought we had the chances to put it to bed. I’m pleased with the squad throughout.

“Tuesday was a tough game mentally and physically so to come out here and put in that performance shows we have great spirit. It was a tough game for everybody, including the fans.”

The manager admitted last week how much of a relief it was to get his first victory of the season, after which his side have only strengthened their winning mentality.

Johnson was in great spirits after Saturday’s game with Fleetwood, who were unbeaten before facing the Latics.

“Fleetwood played a diamond and that can sometimes cause you problems but to compete like they did and be as tidy as they were, it helped us massively.”

Oldham’s player of the month for August, Carl Winchester, is on international duty this week and Johnson believes his good form is down to a pre-season completely unlike 12 months ago.

“Carl has been superb this season. He’s got himself going and we’ve also got him going. We always believed in him but his problem last season was his pre-season because he never got right physically.

“This summer we’ve had him on regime to bulk him up and get his fitness up to scratch. He’s been Championship class at least since the start of the season,” said Johnson.

This weekend’s opponents at SportsDirect.com Park are Gillingham and the Oldham manager is asking for more of the same.

“We’ve got to kick on now. Football can make you feel down again very quickly. Let’s get this side ready for Gillingham and make sure we get this place pumping again.”
