Uwe done it again: Rosler already on road to success at Wigan Athletic after surprise Manchester City FA Cup upset

Uwe Rosler is relishing the chance for his Wigan team to show what they are made of at Wembley again after yesterday’s stunning 2-1 win against Manchester City.

The former Manchester City legend could not hide his joy after his team set-up an FA Cup semi-final tie with Arsenal as they continued the incredible defence of the trophy they won last May.

The 46-year-old German, who only took charge at the DW Stadium in December, masterminded one of the great FA Cup upsets – second only to their shock 1-0 victory over City in last year’s final.

“For a young manager like myself who is climbing up the Championship table with this football club, I don’t think I can have too many complaints that we’re getting the chance to show what we are made of against Arsenal at Wembley,” he said.

“We can’t think about that game too much though, we have to focus on the very next game and we’ll concentrate on Arsenal when the time comes.

“We’re focusing on Wednesday’s game now because that’s another big task for us to tackle.”

Rosler, who won the February Championship manager of the month award, knows that his team must not allow the trip to Wembley to throw their league form off track.

Wigan next take on Sheffield Wednesday in the league then face Arsenal at Wembley on April 13.

It has been a stunning cup run for the Latics, who have already beaten MK Dons and Premier League opposition in Crystal Palace and Cardiff City, to set up the mouth-watering tie with the Gunners.

The Etihad victory came on the back of goals from Jordi Gomez from the penalty spot and James Perch early in the second-half.

Latics survived a late onslaught from City after Samir Nasri pulled one back but the woodwork and some resolute defending saw Wigan to victory.

“It has been a tremendous performance from our whole team, every single player and we have shown no fear,” said Rosler.

“We went into the game with a strong mental approach and we set up in a very similar way to the two games from last season against Manchester City.

“We stamped our own identity on the performance with good pressurising, with a brave approach to getting on the ball at the back in our back three.

“All-in-all we had heroic performances out there today.”
