Arach-NO-phobia: Bury boxer Scott Quigg aims to stamp on Atomic Spider in WBA world title bout

Bury boxer Scott Quigg is gearing up to come to blows with Tshifhiwa Munyai as he defends his WBA world super-bantamweight belt at the Phones 4u Arena on Saturday.

The 25-year-old had been set to face Venezuelan Nehomar Cermeno but visa issues prevented the fight from taking place and so South African Munyai – nicknamed The Atomic Spider – has stepped up.

Quigg will be boxing as part of the ‘Rise Up’ bill which will also feature fellow Manchester fighters Anthony Crolla and John Murray, as well as Liverpool’s Callum Smith.

Promoter Eddie Hearn is confident Quigg can pass the challenge with flying colours in what could be a big year for the unbeaten fighter.

“It’s a great fight for Scott and in my opinion a much tougher test than Cermeno,” Hearn told Sky Sports.

“Munyai is no stranger to these shores and is in impressive form coming into the fight.

“Scott is in fantastic shape and ready to make a big statement as we eye unification fights this summer.”

He retained his title last November with a second-round technical knockout of Argentina’s Diego Oscar Silva to notch up his 27th career win, of which 20 have come via knockout.

Quigg has been tipped for a future showdown against Northern Ireland’s Carl Frampton but will be focusing on Saturday’s challenge as he looks to keep his impeccable record intact.
