'We want the trophy': Manchester City eye Premier League title as Hull victory helps shrug off week of hell

Manchester City’s players have reiterated their determination to win the Premier League title after a 2-0 victory at Hull put an end to a torrid week for the club.

City had to manage with only ten men for much of the game after captain Vincent Kompany was shown an early red card, but goals from David Silva and Edin Dzeko kept their title push on track.

Following their elimination from the Champions League and FA Cup last week Javi Garcia, who became a make-shift centre back against Hull, said everybody at City is now focused on winning back their title from Manchester United.

“That was a big win. This week was a difficult week for us after the two games we lost, but we are focused on the Premier League now and we want the trophy,” the Spaniard told the club website.

Before the match manager Manuel Pellegrini said that his side had to win every game in the run-in, and with City trailing six points behind league leaders Chelsea it was a message he reiterated after the game.

"Unfortunately it's three weeks since we played in the Premier League so the other teams won their points and we have three games in hand,” he said. “That why it was so important to win the three points today."

The Chilean played down the incident between Joe Hart and Hull’s George Boyd in which Boyd appeared to spit in the England keeper’s face after his penalty appeal was turned down.

Pellegrini said he was too far away to see the incident and Hull boss Steve Bruce dismissed the incident as ‘handbags’

The former Malaga manager praised his side for their ‘professional response’ to a tough week and Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho insists City will not be caught looking back in anger.

Pellegrini told the club website: “We will fight for the Premier League title and we need to win every game so now the confidence is very, very high and I hope we will show the same level in the next games.”
