CCTV: Images believed to be murder suspect Michael Cope getting cash and supplies in Wigan store released

By Danielle Wainwright

Murder suspect Michael Cope is believed to have been caught on CCTV buying food and withdrawing cash from an Atherton Road store on Sunday.

Cope, wanted in connection with the murder of mother-of-two Linzi Ashton, was spotted on July 14 at about 1.25pm and has been on the run for almost three weeks.

A £25,000 reward is still being offered by Greater Manchester Police for information that leads to his arrest and conviction.

Linzi was found dead at her home on Saturday June 29 and a post mortem confirmed she had died as a result of pressure to the neck and multiple injuries.

Two men were arrested earlier this month in connection with the manhunt, with Craig Blackburn, 25, of Ivy Street Eccles, charged with assisting an offender and a 27-year-old man has also been bailed pending further enquiries.

Detective Chief Superintendent Darren Shenton said: “We have kept Linzi’s family updated on the investigation and we are also grateful to the communities of Salford for their on-going cooperation throughout the course of our enquiries.

“However, I would now urge the people of Hindley and Wigan to help our investigation if they can; if you have seen the man pictured, please call us.”

Police have warned residents that Cope is familiar with the canal pathways between Salford and Leigh and may have spent time near the canal and waterways in Hindley.

They also believe that he may have been sleeping rough and urge people to report any suspicious behaviour around outbuildings, sheds or gardens, as well as disused railway lines and open land.

DCS Shenton added: “We would like to remind people that if Cope is seen he is not to be approached, as we do believe that he is dangerous and could be armed. Anyone who sees him should call the police immediately.

“Our appeal to the public is to be vigilant, and to let us know if they have seen the man pictured.

“Patrols by local officers are being stepped up, and members of the public can raise any concerns with them.”

Greater Manchester Police have teamed up with Crimestoppers to offer a reward of £25,000 for anyone with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of Cope.

Anyone with any information should call police on 0161 856 5092 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
