‘Inspirational’ Tweddle to announce unsung sporting heroes at Greater Manchester Sports Awards

With 60 individuals shortlisted and ten clubs up for nomination, tonight is the night for the 15th Greater Manchester Sports Awards at the Old Trafford cricket ground.

One nominee has been put forward from Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan in each category to find Greater Manchester’s overall winners.

Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle, who won a bronze medal at London 2012, will be the guest speaker to announce and congratulate the winners.

Yvonne Harrison, GreaterSport chief executive, expects the presence of such a successful athlete at the awards to inspire nominees and guests.

“We are delighted to announce that Beth will not only be joining us at the event, but speaking and inspiring our guests at the Greater Manchester Sports Awards 2015,” Harrison said.

“It is an honour to be surrounded by so many incredible people who have made an exceptional contribution to sport and we hope they are just as excited as us to hear about Beth’s experiences.

“It is such a rewarding evening, celebrating the achievements and sporting successes of the past twelve months across the ten districts, highlighting the very best of community sport and the impact this has to help us change lives.”

The seven award categories are: Changing Lifestyle, Club of the Year, Coach of the Year, Disabled Sports Achiever of the Year, Sports Achiever of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Unsung Hero.

For those not able to attend, full coverage is being provided by BBC Radio Manchester.
