‘Manchester United won’t be panicked’: Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert backs David Moyes to succeed

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert believes his compatriot David Moyes will be given time and will succeed as Manchester United manager.

Lambert takes his Aston Villa side to Old Trafford looking to inflict United’s 11th league defeat of the season – and their seventh at home.

Pressure continues to mount on United boss Moyes but Lambert believes that the Scot will be given time to succeed at Old Trafford.

“I don’t think Manchester United as a football club and an organisation will be panicked into doing anything,” Lambert told SkySports.

“I think the whole furore is outside the football club.

“I would fully expect him to be at Manchester United for a while.”

United are winless in their last three home league games with the 2-0 against Cardiff at Old Trafford on January 28 the last game where they picked up all three points.

Back-to-back hammerings at Old Trafford against great rivals Liverpool and Manchester City have stepped up the speculation surrounding Moyes’ position as United boss.

Lambert though believes that speculation is just an unfortunate part of the game.

“It comes with the territory in the modern game, you are always one bad result away from being absolutely criticised,” Lambert said.

“He is trying his best for Manchester United, the way I am for Aston Villa.

“In years gone by you would probably have got a lot of time, but now the success people want is instant.

“I think some of the criticism is way over the top I really do.”

Villa have won just one of the last 34 meetings with United in all competitions with the 2009 success under Martin O’Neill the first Villa win at Old Trafford since 1983.

The fixture last season saw United clinch the Premier League title courtesy of a hat trick from Robin van Persie in a 3-0 win at Old Trafford.

This time around, United sit seventh in the table, 18 points off the leaders while Villa are not yet safe from the threat of relegation.

Moyes will be without Van Persie through injury while doubts remain over the fitness of Jonny Evans, Tom Cleverley and Chris Smalling.
