Artists, traders and residents have collaborated on a community project to transform Chorlton centre by replacing graffiti with a technicolour outdoor gallery.
Spearheaded by The Chorlton Civic Society, it has improved the area’s appearance and significantly reduced rising graffiti levels – said to be impacting negatively on the area.
The group created 16 unique pieces on business shutters and walls to celebrate Chorlton and its artistic and cultural output.
Cath Fernley, Chorlton Street Art Project organiser, said: “I’m incredibly proud that the artwork has helped display Chorlton in a brighter light, make it more welcoming and a place people can feel proud of, which have all been achieved through local talent and hard work.”
She said that the project demonstrates what a community can achieve together.
She added: “The enthusiasm and support from local businesses, artists and volunteers have been fantastic.”
Fernley consulted traders to determine locations for the artworks while volunteers have been hard at work removing graffiti and ensuring the new pieces convey the character of the neighbourhood.
This follows the success of similar initiatives at the Metrolink station and bridges.
The project was endorsed by the council’s Your Neighbourhood Fund as well as the MSV Kindness Fund to recognise the value it may add to the region.
Councillor Basat Sheikh, Executive Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “I am thrilled to see how the Chorlton Street Art Project has transformed the district as we once knew it.
“Cath has shown tremendous dedication, to deliver a project that has not only improved the appearance of the district centre but has also strengthened community pride.”
Councillor Sheikh said that the reduced amount of graffiti and the favourable response from the Manchester suburb shows the importance of investing in these creative schemes.
A Street Art trail, part of the Chorlton Arts Festival, highlighted the talent on display and the area’s collective spirit.
