Lightwaves Salford celebrates 10 years with spectacular light trail

Salford’s free light trail is celebrating its 10th anniversary this December.

Lightwaves Salford, which is presented by Quays Culture, will run over four evenings from Thursday 7 December to Sunday 10 December 2023, 4pm-10pm.

Kate Doyle, Head of Programme for Quays Culture, said: “Year on year the event delights audiences of all ages and we’re certain that 2023 will be no exception.”

Lightwaves Salford is part of Light up the North, a network of northern light festivals which have come together to share their collective expertise.

While there are many light trails, Lightwaves Salford was the original and is still completely free to visit.

Visitors can expect a variety of different works using light, sound, and technology.

The light trail is made up of 15 pieces by UK-based and international artists.

This year’s Salford event also features three brand-new artworks commissioned by Quays Culture.

CETUS by Loomaland

One of the new sculptures is CETUS, created by Berlin artist Loomaland, which is in the shape of a six-metre-long whale shark.

Loomaland is a returning artist, whose 2021 flotilla CYGNUS, made up of 12 floating swans, was a favourite of visitors.

Pulse, as seen in the header, is a large-scale installation created by UK artist Loop which runs along a 50-metre stretch of the MediaCity Piazza.

The Nectary by artist Alison Smith and Dr Chris Hassall

Another piece said to be a highlight is The Nectary, which consists of six giant hanging blooms.

It is created by artist Alison Smith with Dr Chris Hassall and uses light and sound for a multi-sensory experience.

Award-winning outdoor artist Walk the Plank is also returning to Lightwaves Salford with a Fire Garden.

This artwork blends moving sculpture with fire and includes three brand new giant sculptures – one of which is over nine metres in size.

Doyle said: “As humans we have a primal response to light, especially in the dark winter months.

“It brings warmth, wellbeing and intensifies positive emotions.”
