Official video game for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games out now ahead of real-world event

The official video game based on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games released yesterday ahead of the real-world event next month, offering 18 arcade-style Olympic events.

Developed by SEGA in partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the game features a variety of games inspired by Olympic events that players can play solo, co-operatively or online with up to eight players.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will begin on 23rd July and run until 8th August after it was delayed from last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

IOC television and marketing services VP Elisabeth Allaman said: “By working with SEGA, we are able to attract new and existing fans – especially young people – well beyond the period of the games.

“The Olympic Games have a long history of official video games and we look forward to delighting fans around the world with this latest title for Tokyo 2020.”

As well as the different events to participate in, players can create and customise their own in-game avatar to use in the different events, with over 50 costume options including Sonic the Hedgehog and Miraitowa, the Tokyo 2020 mascot.

SEGA of America president and COO Ian Curran said: “SEGA has a long history of creating fun, family-friendly, inclusive, Olympic-themed video games that bring the thrill of competing on the world’s largest sports stage to living rooms.

“Whether you want to climb the top of the global leader boards or just create a fun avatar and compete in your favourite arcade sport, Tokyo 2020 Olympics is a fun and authentic Olympic experience for fans of all ages.”
