MM’s Year in Review: July

Victory for the Lionesses: On July 31st England’s lionesses Won the European championships defeating Germany 2-1 in extra time for the first time ever. The lionesses had previously lost to Germany in the finals In 2009) but this time they took home the title in front of the biggest ever euro crowd of 87,192 people. 

Wedding bells ringing: July 16th saw American singer and actress Jennifer Lopez and American actor and film director Ben Affleck say their vows at the little white wedding chapel in Las Vegas. After a very rocky relationship over the years they finally said “I Do” after Ben originally proposed back in 2002 before they hit the rocks and split.

Back-out Boris: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his resignation at Downing Street on July 7th after pressure and the mass resignations from his ministers. The day before his resignation was a 24 hour record for resignations with more than 40 government ministers and aides withdrawing support from the PM putting lots of pressure on the Tory leader.

Gymnasts phenomenal award: On July 8th Gymnast Simone Biles aged 25 became the youngest person to receive the US Presidential Medal of Freedom from president Joe Biden. Already a three time world all-around champion, three time world floor champion, two time world balance beam champion, four time United States national all-around champion and a member of the gold medal-winning American teams this was just another award to add to the long long list. 

South Korean Success: Netflix’s South Korean drama “Squid Game” was the first non-English series to be nominated for an Emmy on July 12th for outstanding Drama. Squid game is a South Korean Netflix series that delves into the question “how far would people go to solve their financial crisis?” it was a hit amongst many and was watched and talked about worldwide.
