Manchester Pride needs YOU: LGBT festival searches for ‘stars’ to help with annual Big Weekend

Manchester Pride is seeking out hundreds of dedicated volunteers to become ‘Pride Stars’ and take part in the iconic LGBT festival.

For this year’s event the team has made the application process simpler, given volunteers greater control of their shifts, and renamed them to capture the essence of Pride and make them stand out from the crowd.

Tying in with the start of Volunteers Week, which is the annual celebration of volunteering, from this week on prospective Pride Stars can apply to fill a whole range of roles from promo crew at the star-studded Big Weekend, to parade marshals, to bucket-wielding fundraisers.

Chief Executive of Manchester Pride Mark Fletcher said: Our volunteers make a huge difference and are an integral part of the successful running of Manchester Pride.

“Be it helping us raise money through bucket collections, assisting our visitors in navigating the site or being on hand during the parade, every volunteer has a vital role to play.

“There are loads of opportunities to get involved and make a real difference while meeting new friends, or learning some brand new skills.

“The events we host could not happen without the enthusiasm and dedication of the people who offer their valuable time in this way.”

In celebration of this year seeing the introduction of equal marriage, the theme of Pride 2014 is love.

The festival will take place throughout August, featuring a colourful range of arts, culture, music and comedy across Greater Manchester.

The Big Weekend will run August 22-25, and will see performance from stars such as Kelis, Boy George, Little Boots and Steps, to name a few.

Online applications are now open to anyone who wants to volunteer during the festival, and the team encourage early submission.
