Brad Pitt? Leonardo DiCaprio? Mancunians vote for their sexiest film stars ahead of Great Gatsby release

By Glen Keogh

Pitt? DiCaprio? Clooney? For years men have struggled to welcome these names in conversations with their other half, as their mere mention is usually preceded by gasps of excitement and nervous eyelash fluttering.

Whether you agree with the perennial ‘top three’ of the world’s best looking men or not, don’t worry, as a Manchester survey has finally revealed our most lusted after on-screen male character.

A survey by Odeon Manchester saw our city vote Leonardo DiCaprio as the most attractive on-screen character for his portrayal of Richard in The Beach, whereas Londoners opted for Brad Pitt for his role as Tyler Durden in Fight Club.

In the battle of female film beauties, the people of Manchester said Scarlett Johansson was sexier than Harry Potter star Emma Watson.

The study was conducted ahead of Baz Luhrmann’s forthcoming film version of The Great Gatsby, which hits cinema screens on May 16th.

Despite the hype surrounding the film’s release, almost half of those polled in Manchester (46%), didn’t know The Great Gatsby is a book.

It asked film fans to vote on their most attractive actors and actresses from book-to-film adaptations.

Johansson, with 14% of the votes for her turn as Griet in The Girl with the Pearl Earring, just pipped blossoming Emma Watson’s Hermione Grainger to first place in sexiest woman by a 2% margin.

However, Watson can take pride in the fact that Manchester’s favourite film adaptation is the Harry Potter series, which beat Peter Jackson’s epic Lord of the Rings trilogy to top spot.

DiCaprio will take the lead as the enigmatic Gatsby in the new film, with Steve Gleave, General Manager of Odeon Manchester, predicting it to prove hugely popular.

“We are especially delighted to offer guests the opportunity to experience this film in the most luxurious way possible with our newly refurbished Gallery offering,” he said.

“We look forward to welcoming guests through our doors to enjoy The Great Gatsby on our fully digital 3D enabled screens.”

The survey also found that Manchester’s favourite male character was Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) in Bridget Jones’s Diary, as well as him being a part of Manchester’s favourite love story with Bridget (Renee Zellweger) in the same film.
