Elderly man killed as car collides with lorry on East Lancs Road near Leigh – BOTH drivers arrested

By Glen Keogh

An elderly man died after his car collided with a lorry on the East Lancs Road yesterday – leading to the arrests of BOTH drivers.

The man was a passenger in a red Citroen Picasso which collided with a lorry on the westbound side of the A580 between Asherleigh Way and Lane Head at about 4pm.

He was air-lifted to hospital with serious leg injuries following the incident but died just a few hours later.

Two men, the drivers of the vehicles involved, were arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and are now in police custody.

The crash closed the westbound carriageway of the A580 for some time, and there may still be disruptions.
