Salford local elections: what to expect

The local elections are just around the corner and voters in Salford will soon be casting their ballots.

But who can you vote for, what’s at stake and what’s happening in the area?

Salford is a city and metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester, located next to Manchester city centre.

In the 2022 local elections, Labour retained control of Salford City Council with a strong majority.

Labour: 49 (-3)

Conservatives: 8 (+1)

Liberal Democrats: 2 (+1)

Salford is also governed by a directly elected mayor, currently Labour’s Paul Dennett, and there have been some changes since 2022 including Reform UK winning their first seat in Salford after being elected in Barton and Winton.

Local issues include the rising cost of living, housing pressures and inequality, with one recent report focusing on residents in Eccles who say their town centre feels neglected amid wider regeneration across Salford.

Labour is confident they will retain control, whilst Reform UK expect to gain seats, and the Conservatives aim to hold their position.

A full list of candidates can be found on Salford council website.

Population size: 294,348.

Salford is known as the birthplace of vegetarianism and for its links to Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx, as well as being home to the major media hub, Media City, at Salford Quays.
