Pay day lenders and loan sharks who ‘prey on people’s anxieties’ to be tackled in Salford money advice day

By Salah Sharief

Salford residents will be given the opportunity to get money-savvy advice on how to manage their incomes and avoid loan sharks next week.

On June 12, as part of national Stop Loan Sharks week, the council will inform people of the alternatives to pay day lenders and loan sharks.

In addition to general information, financial advisors will be on hand to offer private and confidential one-to-one advice.

Councillor Peter Connor, Assistant Mayor for Adult Services, said: “In these times when everyone is feeling under pressure to spend what money they have with care, we know there are unscrupulous people and organisations ready to take advantage of people’s worries.

“The event is open to everyone who wants to find out more about managing their money and affordable credit and to help stop loan sharks preying on people’s anxieties and point people in the direction of better options.”

The event will be at the Salford Opportunities Centre in Paddington Close, off Churchill Way, near Salford Precinct from 10am to 2.30pm.

There’s also a chance to win one of ten £25 shopping vouchers and a chance to donate items such as tinned food to the food bank.

For more information about the event contact Salford City Council Public Relations on 0161 793 3410, or you can email [email protected]
