Lorry overturns on Barton Bridge as 60mph winds batter Greater Manchester roads and trains

Gales of up to 60mph are battering Greater Manchester roads, overturning lorries and sending debris hurtling down onto pedestrians.

A lorry overturned on Barton Bridge on the M60 in Trafford this morning, closing two lanes of the clockwise carriageway– no-one is belived to have been injured.

Meanwhile Manchester Deansgate was closed in both directions between John Dalton Street and St Mary’s Street earlier today because of falling debris from buildings.

Drivers of high-sided lorries and other vulnerable vehicles are being urged to plan journeys and remain vigilant when driving.

These incidents occurred after a Manchester van driver escaped with only minor injuries after a 70-foot tree landed on his van. 

Train commuters using services from Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Victoria are to expect discruptions, with some cancellations and delays of up to an hour.
