Manchester Central Mosque looks forward to welcoming Ramadan

Muslims around the world are getting ready to celebrate Ramadan as the ninth month in the Islamic calendar draws near.

Starting on March 10, the religious month focuses on fasting, prayer and reflection, bringing a community together.

In Manchester, it is no different.

President of Manchester Central Mosque Hammad Khan, 45 has been at the forefront since 2020, with this being the fifth and sixth generation that his family have been involved.

With the religion having Ramadan at different times of the year, depending on the sunrise and sunset, it can bring difficulties to those who aren’t used to giving up food and drink, among other sacrifices.

Hammad said: “Ramadan brings a challenge but as kids grow up, they want to fast.”

The mosque itself holds at least 3,000 people after three extensions since it first opened.

With at least 100 students in summer school and 300 kids studying every day, they are educated through ‘Reading the Quran, understanding the five pillars of Islam and what they mean’.

Hammad said: “Studying from the age of six to the age of 16, the older the kids get, the more material they are taught in more depth.”

With a number of mosques in and around Manchester, young Muslims get into Ramadan through their friends and older siblings practicing.

Hammad said: “When you break your fast at the end of day, it is a massive achievement, something that you will hold on to for the rest of your life.

“You start your fast before sunrise, eating something with high carb, protein based with plenty of fluid called the Suhoor.

“Breaking your fast is a meal called Iftar at sunset. Breaking with water and date is a tradition. Dates are high in sugar content, as you haven’t eaten, it gives you that boost.”

The mosque hosts Iftar with at least 700 people everyday throughout the month.

To accommodate everyone, the mosque is now under its fourth extension used for classrooms, multipurpose community spaces, for weddings and funerals, being able to provide those facilities simultaneously.

Manchester Central Mosque is located in the middle of Victoria Park at 20 Upper Park Rd, Manchester M14 5RU.
