Wigan man charged with assault following death of four-month-old baby girl

A man has been charged with six counts of assault after the death of a baby in Wigan.

Martin Thomas, 31, has been charged after police found a four-month-old girl unconscious and not breathing at an address on Beech Hill Avenue on February 21.

The young girl was rushed to hospital and died a short time later.

Following a Home Office post-mortem examination six days later, a number of fractures were discovered to the baby’s head and body.

Further tests were carried out to establish the cause of death, however these came back inconclusive.

Thomas has been charged with six counts of section 18 assault and is due before Wigan Magistrates’ court on Friday April 11, 2014.

Greater Manchester Police have said a 24-year-old woman who was arrested on suspicion of murder and child neglect will not be charged.
