Wigan widower’s photo of deceased wife and letter he penned before she died stolen by masked robber

By Danielle Wainwright

An 86-year-old widower’s wallet which contained a photo of his deceased wife and a letter he wrote to her just before she died 16 years ago was stolen from his Wigan home.

The incident happened on Wednesday just after 5pm when a masked intruder broke into a house in Stopforth Street and confronted the elderly man who was sat in the living room.

The robber demanded money from the elderly victim and pushed him to the floor before rifling through his pockets and fleeing with his wallet.

Detective Constable Kevin Telford said: “While there was no cash in the wallet, there was a photograph and a letter which he wrote to his wife just before she died 16 years ago.

“He has carried the letter and photo of his wife around with him in this wallet since she died so it is of great sentimental value to him.

“It’s likely the wallet has been discarded now so we are appealing to the community to get in touch if they come across the wallet so we can return it to him.

Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 5307 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
